Most people consider buying a new dryer unit when they move into a new house and need to install a drying machine for the first time. One of the most common questions that gets asked is should I buy a separate drying machine or should I go for a washer dryer combo. When making a decision on which appliance to buy it is important to do some research in order to get the best machine that best suits your needs.
Most of the separate drying units are much bigger than their combo cousins. Most separate machines have a drum capacity of approximately 5 to 7 cubic feet whereas most compact models have around 3 cubic feet of space. Compact models are particularly useful where space is of a premium such as in apartments, cottages or even a boat. Most drying machines are powered by electricity although it is possible to purchase a unit that is powered by gas. Many gas powered machines can be more economical in the long run.
It can be quite daunting when going to a department store or showroom for the first time. The choice of manufacturers such as Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and GE can be quite overwhelming. Therefore, a useful exercise to do is an online search for the various different makes on a site such as Amazon. These will list all the various features, sizes and extra bonuses that come with the machine. When visiting a store it essential to measure the space where the dryer is going to fit. If you have a large family you'll probably need to purchase a full-size machine which are usually about 28 inches wide. If the space is much smaller than this then it is worth considering a mini drying machine or a mini washer dryer combo.
Like combination machines you will need to choose between a vented or non-vented model. A vented model pushes the hot damp air from the machine, outside of the house and into the open air. A non-vented model or condenser model takes the hot damp air and passes it through a condenser which collects the water into a container in the machine, which must be emptied regularly. Vented models tend to be cheaper than condenser models but they do have the disadvantage of requiring a way of connecting to the outside world. A condenser machine has the advantage in that it can be placed anywhere in the house. A good quality dryer should not leak steam into the room.
The decision between a separate machine or a combo machine basically comes down to the size of the space into which it is going to be installed. ou will achieve the same end result although a washer dryer combo will take, overall, longer to dry the clothes than a separate machine.
